Circular product development: New system supports companies in their transformation

Due to growing pressure from regulations, customers, and environmental requirements, companies are faced with the challenge of fundamentally rethinking their product development. The  it's OWL project Zirkupro  offers a practical solution: a structured process model paired with a comprehensive toolbox of methods that helps companies efficiently design and implement sustainable products. The combination of these two tools makes it possible to systematically integrate circular economy into the development process – right from the start.

To provide companies with a clear approach, the project team has developed a process model that divides the entire process of circular product development into five phases:

  1. Initiation – Creating the foundations for circular product development.

  1. Potential identification – identification of optimization opportunities to increase circularity.

  1. Solution design – development of concrete measures for implementation.

  1. Evaluation – Assessment of solutions from economic, ecological and social perspectives.

  1. Implementation – Introduction of the successfully evaluated solutions into practice.

Each phase contains defined activities and is structured by milestones that ensure the achievement of the set goals.

The ZirkuPro Method Kit: Practical support for companies

A central tool of the system is the ZirkuPro Method Kit, a collection of 21 proven and newly developed methods that specifically support companies in the various phases of the process model. The method kit was developed based on extensive research and an interview study with experts. The resulting kit comprises a total of 21 methods, including both proven practical approaches and specially developed approaches to support circular product development.

"A particular challenge was to present the 21 methods in a clear and structured manner to enable a targeted and effective selection of the appropriate methods. To ensure this, the methods were organized according to the individual phases of the product life cycle in which their application is relevant. Methods are provided for product planning, development, production, use, and recycling," says Luca Twardzik, project coordinator at Fraunhofer IEM. For example, the product planning phase includes methods for developing business models; the development phase employs methods to support circular product design; and the use phase offers methods that, for example, provide insights into repairability.

In addition to classifying their application within the product life cycle, the methods are also categorized according to their objectives: methods for identifying potential, solution design, and evaluation. "This means that the objectives are directly linked to the phases of the process model, so that the methods can be applied specifically in the respective phases," says Twardzik. Methods with the objective of identifying potential can, for example, be used in the phase of the process model with the same name to support the identification of opportunities for improving circularity. In addition, a separate method profile has been developed for each method, which presents the respective method at a glance and makes its application and objectives clear and understandable. Companies thus receive targeted support in the development of sustainable products.

The ZirkuPro method kit specifically assigns various methods to these phases to support companies in implementing circular value creation.

Successful application in industry

The system has already been successfully tested within the project consortium. Companies were able to specifically select methods from the ZirkuPro method toolbox and apply them in the individual phases of the process model. A particularly successful example is CP contech electronic GmbH. The company implemented several methods from the method toolbox and integrated them into its own product development process. "The results were consistently positive," says Twardzik. Sven Peiffer, Head of Product Development at CP contech electronic GmbH, confirms: "Thanks to the systematic approach and the targeted application of the methods from the ZirkuPro method toolbox, we have received valuable input for increasing circularity in our product development process. The integration of these approaches will enable us to develop circular products for and with our customers in the future, thus actively contributing to the circular economy."

Conclusion: A practical tool for industry

The developed system, consisting of a process model and a toolbox, provides companies with a holistic tool for effectively implementing circular product development. The close integration of the two elements facilitates practical implementation and offers a structured, targeted approach. This enables companies to actively contribute to the circular economy and develop sustainable, innovative products.
