Publication "Toward a structured concept for purpose-driven modeling of a digital shadow in manufacturing" presented at 33rd CIRP Design Conference in Sydney

The 33rd CIRP Design Conference, which was organized by Prof. Ang Liu and Prof. Sami Kara of the  University of New South Wales (UNSW) , addressed challenges for engineering design. On the one hand, it presented new solutions to a variety of significant engineering challenges in the post-pandemic world that can be addressed with innovative design thinking. On the other hand, transformations of engineering design towards higher intelligence and digitalization were presented. A contribution of ConSensE to address these challenges was provided by Tobias Reichenstein, Spyridon Georg Koustas, Alexander Roßner, Moritz Meiners and Jörg Franke with the publication "Toward a structured concept for purpose-driven modeling of a digital shadow in manufacturing", which provides a process model for purpose-driven conceptualization of digital shadows in manufacturing.

Abstract

The growing relevance of Industry 4.0-related technologies and the transformation towards service-oriented business models in manufacturing requires relevant, high-quality data. The digital representation of operation and manufacturing under a specific purpose is called a digital shadow (DS). Although this purpose represents the decisive factor between different digital shadows, its systematic determination has been addressed insufficiently. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic, purpose-driven modeling approach for the digital shadow supporting manufacturing companies in developing a data basis for applications. This approach is applied to a crimping machine as an example and will be optimized in future evaluations.
